Jimmy Finler. Lives in: the home of the Glass family, Cumber Poidy. Occupation: Soloist singer, wants to become a member of the Cumber Poidy choir Comments: "Jimmy is a small, underfed child at the age of eight. He has light brown hair and dark brown eyes. Two teeth are missing from his smile, one on the top row and the other on the bottom row. He ran away from home because his parents always fought and never paid any attention to him. He has a voice of an angel and always entertained neighborhood children with his talent. Now, he wants to join the Cumber Poidy choir." Jimmy has been taken in by the Glass family. This clan is responsible for the aquisition of Table Weed, a rare delicacy that grows in deep sea trenches off the northern shore of Cumber Poidy Island. Young Glass children are trained to hold their breaths for extended peroids of time so that they can swim long distances underwater and collect the weed. The strength of Jimmy's voice appeals to them. They can see that he already has some rudimentary ideas about breath control, and it is their belief that he will one day be a superb diver. They are more concerned about his diving ability than his singing (the Glasses are a Cumber Poidy anomaly, having little interest in music which they see as a frivolous poorly-paid occupation) but they pity the runaway boy and have arranged for him to audition in front of the choirleaders. Singing may not be the way they would like him to spend his life, but they reason that it can't hurt to indulge him while he is still young.
