More about Golith O'Charmien.

(From the pen of Samara Jalàya)

Duke Goliath O'Charmi'en is the second child of Duke Easte O'Charmi'en and Duchess Maraya Marevna of Hum. Their first child was a daughter, Sauth O'Charmi'en, and she was about three years older than Goliath. But one night after Maraya had put Sauth in her cradle in one of the towers and left, she and her husband heard screaming and crying. Maraya ran up the stairs. One of the windows was opened and Sauth and her cradle were gone.

Goliath grew up in The Castle Of The Five Winds, the O'Charmi'en's castle. When he was young Goliath was impressed by skies, wind and air. He often went up to the highest tower to watch the birds floating in the air. And very often people saw him climbing up a mountain or hill, spreading out his arms and shouting: "Carry me wind!" One day his father told Goliath, severely, that he had to stop with his nonsense. "People can't float," he said and ordered him out of the room.

But notwithstanding all these sermons, Goliath always kept loving birds and flying. And when he was older he build in one of the gardens of his castle a giant cage and started collecting birds.

Goliath has a second liking, mirrors. One of his favourite rooms of the enormous Castle Of The Five Winds is the Mirror Room, a room completely made of mirrors. The ceiling, the walls, the ground. When Goliath was young he loved to be alone in this room. He walked from wall to wall, looking backwards, sideways and turned around. And when somebody entered the room and asked him what he was doing, Goliath answered: "I'm with so many! I'm everywhere!" Still Goliath is partial to mirrors. Not because he's a vain person, but because he loves the endless repeating of the image of a person. "Sitting down here I feel supreme," he once said. "And as long as I am here nobody can damage me. My mirror friends will watch over me. They protect me and I protect them."

Nowadays Goliath lives in his castle, together with a few servants ("I don't need a lot of servants. I am able to look after myself, really. I'm not a toddler!") and his insane grandfather Hope Weste O'Charmi'en ("He's one hundred and thirty-two, but refuses to die. He will never do me a favour, he only stays alive to tease me"). Goliath is the last O'Charmi'en and although he knows it's important to get a lot of children to maintain his family, he doesn't make haste to find a woman. "The question is not how, but with how. I'll marry someone I love (oh how cliché this sounds!) I just mean I will meet her someday. She'll be carried to me by the winds."
