The Young Mouse and the
Cat.
One day a very young mouse saw a cat. The cat
chased her. She escaped and ran back to the other small animals,
shouting, "Oh help! A cat, and it's going to eat me!" But the
other animals said, "Hush! You're too young to know what you're
talking about." The rabbit said, "It wasn't a cat, it was a
sparrow." The sparrow said, "It wasn't a cat, it was a water
vole." The water vole said, "It wasn't a cat, it was a
hamster." The hamster said, "It wasn't a cat, it was a
bilby." The Mouse's mother said, "It wasn't a cat, it was a large
mouse. Now go outside and play." The young mouse was woebegone
and cried, "There are so many of these people and only one of me. I
must be wrong." So she went back to the cat and told it, "You are
not a cat;" and the cat ate her.
The End.
